World's 1st Private Deep-Space Telescope to Hunt Dangerous Asteroids

The hunt is on. A group of scientists has banded together to build the world?s first privately funded deep-space telescope, to hunt for asteroids that could pose a major threat to Earth.

The private space telescope forms the heart of Project Sentinel, a deep-space mission being unveiled today (June 28) in Mountain View, Calif., by the B612 Foundation, a nonprofit group of scientists and explorers that has long advocated the exploration of asteroids and better space rock monitoring.

Project Sentinel involves the development of a super-snooper telescope that would be placed in orbit around the sun. The goal, foundation officials say, is to create the first comprehensive dynamic map of our inner solar system.

That map would yield a lively look at the present and future locations and trajectories of near-Earth asteroids, paving the way to protecting the Earth from future impacts and opening the solar system to future exploration. [Sentinel Space Telescope's Asteroid Mission (Pictures)]??

Ed Lu is B612 chairman and CEO, a former NASA astronaut who has flown on the space shuttle and Russia's Soyuz capsule and lived aboard the International Space Station.

"The reason we?re doing this is because we can!"Lu told SPACE.com

Private organizations can now carry out awe-inspiring and audacious projects that previously only governments could accomplish, Lu said.

"So it isn?t crazy to think of a large telescope being funded privately. In fact, historically, that has been the way large, private telescopes here on Earth have been funded. The exception here is that rather than being on the Earth, this one is orbiting the sun," Lu said.

A lot of work has gone into shaping Project Sentinel over the last year, Lu said. Akin to the architectural plans for a building, he said, a preliminary spacecraft and mission design is complete.

"This isn?t a viewgraph," Lu added."What we?ve built is the best technical team on this planet."

A firm fixed-price proposal to carry out Project Sentinel has been submitted by Ball Aerospace of Boulder, Colo., enabled in part by early infrared-detector work funded by B612.

No stranger to big space scopes, Ball Aerospace is the technical sparkplug behind such NASA-sponsored spacecraft as theplanet-hunting Kepler mission and the infrared Spitzer Space Telescope.

Under a NASA Space Act Agreement signed with B612, the space agency will provide Deep Space Network communications and tracking as well as technical support.

Hunting asteroids for all mankind

Project Sentinel would complete its near-Earth object (NEO) survey work in 5.5 years.

"The line in the sand is for the spacecraft to find 90 percent of near-Earth objects larger than 140 meters [459 feet] in size. That translates into approximately a 100-megaton explosion should one hit the Earth," Lu said. "If we go as long as we think we?re going to go, we?re also going to find the vast majority of Tunguskas, too." [7 Strangest Asteroids in the Solar System]

The Tunguska River in remote Siberia was the site directly under a huge explosion in 1908, an air burst of a large meteoroid or comet fragment estimated to have flattened more than 80 million trees over 830 square miles (2,150 square kilometers).

According to B612, only about 10,000 of the more than half million asteroids ?larger than the 1908 Tunguska asteroidwhose orbits cross Earth?s orbit have been discovered and tracked.

Project Sentinel would find and road-map Earth-bound asteroids with sufficient warning time ? years to decades ? to enable deflection missions.

This all adds up to an awe-inspiring project for the global good, the B612 NEO team said.

Space telescope price tag

What?s the cost to build the Project Sentinel telescope?

"We can?t disclose the final price, but I can give you a ballpark of a few hundred million dollars. Which is, I think, a factor of several less than what NASA could do this for," Lu said.

To foot the bill for Project Sentinel, a worldwide fundraising campaign is being implemented, including outreach to citizens around the globe.

"Our constituency is everybody," said B612 spokeswoman Diane Murphy.

"If you think about it, what we are is a small capital campaign," Lu said. "At any given time in the United States, there?s probably a hundred fundraising campaigns larger than this ? for symphony halls, museums, performing arts centers."

Data pipeline set

As now forecast, Project Sentinel would be launched in 2016 aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, Lu said. The spacecraft operations center is to be based at the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (LASP) at the University of Colorado, Boulder.

Project Sentinel would require a gravity slingshot off Venus to enter solar orbit. Data relay would be carried out through the NASA Deep Space Network. Data analysis ? identification of NEO threats ? is to be handled through an existing data pipeline at the Minor Planet Center in Cambridge, Mass., and the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif.

"When you stand back from this, ? this is like the whole issue of mapping the U.S, and almost everything else that precedes real development and exploration," said former astronaut Rusty Schweickart, B612 chairman emeritus, who was the lunar module pilot on the Apollo 9 mission.

"The meta-view of what we?re doing ? is mapping the Earth, sun, the inner solar system ? the Earth Territory, if you will," Schweickart said. That, he said, would pave the way toward protecting the Earth from impacts and opening the solar system to exploration. ??

Legacy space systems

"An exciting aspect of Ball?s role on Sentinel is leveraging sophisticated technology developed under the Deep Impact, Spitzer, and Kepler missions for the B612 Foundation," said John Troeltzsch, the company?s Sentinel Program manager.

Troeltzsch told SPACE.com the aerospace firm will reuse deep-space elements the company helped pioneer. For the privately funded mission, that could include the science-downlink technology flown on Kepler and the cryogenic thermal-isolation system from the Spitzer Space Telescope.

The Sentinel ground system will build on the system in daily use by the Kepler mission, which is supplied to Ball by the LASP at Colorado-Boulder.

"Ball has been working on the mission concept for a NEO survey mission like Sentinel since 2005. This has allowed us to refine and iterate the design to a state of maturity that supports a commercial offering to B612," Troeltzsch said. "Although there are challenges in front of us, like the development of the focal plane detectors, the overall system is based on proven, high-heritage systems."

Troeltzsch said it?s not every day you can have fun working on a powerful space telescope and help protect the planet at the same time.

?Sooner or later one of the NEOs that Sentinel will discover will end up on a collision course with the Earth. I am sure that my kids and grandkids will appreciate the foresight B612 has shown in sponsoring this mission to help protect us all,? Troeltzsch concluded.

Unfixable Computers Are Leading Humanity Down a Perilous Path ...

I?ve been writing about Apple and the value of repair for the better part of the last decade. Repair is our mission at iFixit ? and it always has been. Even so, I didn?t expect the scale of the public response when I argued last week that consumers should choose the hackable, fixable non-Retina MacBook Pro over its sleeker-and-shinier-but-locked-down sibling.

The debate has been contentious. Garrett Murray argues that repairability is ludditism, old-fashioned inertia dragging down forward progress. He believes that more compact devices will necessarily be less upgradeable and hackable.

Others said repair doesn?t matter; consumers don?t care. On some level, they?re right. If something breaks, most computer owners won?t grab a screwdriver ? they?ll take it to a specialist. And if the computer outlives its usefulness, they won?t upgrade their machine, they?ll just buy a faster one. Some folks correctly pointed out that Apple products are more durable than other computers. Plus, Apple has a reputable extended warranty program.

But sending your difficult-to-repair computer off to a Genius doesn?t exempt you from repair troubles. About a third of computers break by the fourth year. AppleCare doesn?t cover accidents and only lasts up to three years. Less repairable design guarantees that fixing stuff will be more expensive and complicated. Repairability is important for consumers.

Yet I think this argument misses the bigger point. The future of this planet depends on the quality of our electronic devices ? and how long they last.

Technology doesn?t just make our lives more convenient. It makes life better on a global scale. Modern communications have driven advances in biotechnology, soil science, and medicine. For the first time, farmers are able to get instant weather advisories, pay for fertilizer by phone while standing in the field, and fight back against local monopolies with access to global commodity prices. Globally, we manufactured 1.6 billion cell phones last year, and we?ll make over 2 billion this year. The problem? The way we?re doing it hurts people and permanently damages our environment.

I dream of a sustainable technology industry that makes life-changing innovations like the iPad available to everyone on the planet. But I have a message for Jonathan Ive. I think that on top of building amazing new products, the technology industry should have three goals:

I?ve spent a lot of time studying these problems. I?ve visited the electronics scrapyards in Ghana where children burn electronics to mine them for raw materials. I?ve interviewed product designers at leading electronics manufacturers, including ones that integrate life cycle analysis into their design process. And I?ve spent a lot of time studying the aftermarket ? the raw underbelly of the consumer electronics industry, where repair, reuse, and material recovery happen.

There?s no such thing as a completely green cell phone or computer. Even elective ?green? standards like EPEAT are far from mandating environmentally neutral products. I?m on the EPEAT balloting committee, and chemical companies have successfully lobbied for years to water down standards ? much to the chagrin of everyone, including many manufacturers.

I?ve learned that most of the environmental and social impact of the electronics industry happens outside of the purview of the device manufacturers: It happens in mines and chemical factories well upstream of Foxconn and in unregulated scrapyards around the world.

Pit mining is savaging the environment, causing water pollution issues that lead to birth defects and are unbelievably expensive to clean up. Semiconductor manufacturers? insatiable demand for a vast array of minerals is also causing geopolitical issues. China is heavily restricting exports of rare earth metals to prop up its domestic manufacturing sector.

?Goodbye, iBook. In your death, may you give life to a dozen more computers.?

When the warranty ends, manufacturers would prefer it if stuff disappeared so they could sell you a new product. But the real world isn?t nearly so tidy. Only a small fraction of the electronics produced are recycled. And even then, they?re usually shredded and separated into component materials. Shredding is a waste of resources and squanders the embodied energy in devices. Worse, many materials, including rare earths and coltan, are not being recovered at all.

So, why do we keep making more devices? We?re pretty close to manufacturing almost all of the electronics we need. There?s no need to make a billion more cell phones next year than we did this year. Increased manufacturing isn?t just due to advances in technology ? we?re not very efficient at utilizing things that we already make. If you don?t have at least one cell phone in your junk drawer, I bet someone in your family does. That phone could be helping someone else.

In an ideal world, after you?ve moved on to your next gadget, technicians will continue to repair, salvage, and refurbish the old one. It will move on from owner to owner. iFixit is part of that ecosystem ? in addition to teaching repair, we buy computers from people and resell the components. I once received a computer with a handwritten note on it: ?Goodbye, iBook. In your death, may you give life to a dozen more computers.?

And that?s my hope for electronics everywhere. Fortunately, the migration of usable electronics to the developing world is natural. Lots of people can?t afford to buy new computers. Passing along old devices is the best way to share the benefits of technology. In a few years, the computer that you gave to Goodwill could very well end up in a computer lab in Kenya. I know electronics refurbishers that have resold the exact same computer six or seven times. And assuming repair techs have the knowledge and skill required to maintain them, those computers will serve their owners well, costing less each time they?re passed along.

Long-lasting, repairable hardware is the key to making computers available to people who couldn?t otherwise afford them. Upgradeable tech also helps ? even if you don?t upgrade your own computer, somebody else down the line can. It?s amazing how long people can keep technology running.

Manufacturing electronics results in lots of nasty environmental problems, everything from toxic dumping to aldehyde vapor emissions. We have decided, if only by inaction, that the cost of our hyper-productive modern lifestyle is worth these tradeoffs. I?m culpable myself ? I live at the cutting edge along with all of you.

But if we?re going to make that tradeoff, the least we could do is to pass on the technology we?re enjoying now. That?s why I am so eager to promote hardware that lasts and call out products that don?t. It?s critically important that we fix things when they break. Consumers need to demand products that aren?t just light and thin, but can also stand the test of time. Because technology is far more than just another new gadget ? it?s our future.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) ? Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels was hailed as a visionary who could bring innovation despite his lack of academic credentials as he was introduced Thursday as the next president of Purdue University, quashing speculation he could be the GOP nominee for vice president.

Purdue officials announced the former White House budget director and Eli Lilly executive would be the university's 12th president following a unanimous vote by the school's Board of Trustees, eight of whom were appointed by Daniels. One trustee was out of the country and did not vote.

The governor will replace France Cordova, who is stepping down in July after five years at Purdue's helm.

"He's a visionary. He's a strategist. He's an innovator. But most of all, he's a doer," said trustee Chairman Keith Krach.

The two-term governor and former White House budget director will take office in January once his term as governor expires. Daniels, once thought to be mulling a presidential run, opted not to join the crowded Republican field. His appointment largely ends the possibility that presumptive nominee Mitt Romney might tap him as a running mate or, if elected, to a Cabinet post.

Daniels, 63, is expected to bring a business-minded approach and an image as an efficient manager to the job he takes over in January, after his second term as governor ends. But he'll also find himself on the flip side of a challenging education environment that has seen state money for public institutions decline dramatically in recent years.

Daniels, wearing a black and gold tie given to him by former Purdue President Martin Jischke, said he was "troubled but persuaded by those who say higher education must modernize its methods and assert its traditional values."

Trustees voiced enthusiastic support for Daniels as the university's next leader.

As governor, Daniels ordered $150 million carved out of state higher education funding in December 2009 as the state's revenues declined. Purdue's state funding has fallen from a peak of $262 million in 2008-09 to $233.9 million for the just-completed school year.

The university also came under fire from state lawmakers over its tuition increases at the height of the recession. Purdue's in-state tuition rates have risen by as much as 62 percent since 2004, according to figures provided by the university.

Daniels has rejected university leaders' contention that state aid cuts have forced them to raise tuition.

Daniels has aggressively tackled education issues during his tenure, helping to establish Western Governors University, an online option for nontraditional students, and pushing the Legislature to reduce the number of credit hours it takes to achieve some degrees. He also led changes in K-12 education, including the nation's broadest use of school vouchers.

"I hope to become an audible and credible voice for the critical role of higher education in the nation's future, and an effective advocate of Purdue to those who might support its growth in quality and reputation," Daniels said.

Daniels said he would spend much of the next six months asking questions and listening.

"I've not made a life in the academy, but I have spent my life reading and admiring and attempting to learn from those who do," he said.

Even so, his reputation for pushing through aggressive change could get a mixed reception on the 40,000-student West Lafayette campus. During his tenure as governor, he has rankled union activists upset by Indiana's new right-to-work law and drew fire over state efforts to privatize the state's welfare system and cut public funding to Planned Parenthood because it performs abortions.

But analysts say he will bring to Purdue leadership skills and a national reputation from his days as a former White House budget director that will help him tackle the challenges ahead. He also will give Purdue coveted fundraising clout as the university aims to double its $200 million in annual gifts over the next decade.

Daniels has easily outpaced his Democratic opponents in his two campaigns for governor by tapping into a national network of donors who supported George W. Bush's presidential races.

"One of the top three jobs for a university president, no matter what the circumstances, is fundraising," said Dennis Barden, senior vice president with the executive search firm Witt/Kieffer.

"Your average politician is pretty fickle when it comes to connecting with people, engaging with them, building relationships with them, and stating a case for support. These are all the things that lead to excellent fundraising," Barden said.

Though Purdue's past presidents have largely been scholars or scientists ? Cordova is an astrophysicist ? Daniels isn't the first politician to take over a university. Former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates served as president of Texas A&M University and is now chancellor of the College of William and Mary in Virginia. Former governors David Boren of Oklahoma and Richard Celeste of Ohio also have led universities.

Nintendo talks Wii U, Mario and Nintendoland

After the show floor shut down at E3 on Tuesday, there was a modest gathering for press and fans to speak with a couple of Nintendo developers about the Wii U and its games. In attendance were?Katsuya?Eguchi,?producer of Nintendoland, and?Takashi Tezuka, producer of New Super Mario Bros U. They talked for a bit about their new games and demonstrated the gameplay themselves before opening up the floor to Q&A.

One thing they both talked up was the presence of the Miiverse in their games. It's not, as Eguchi put it, just a game-specific message board. In Nintendoland, for instance, your park will be populated with real people, whom you can speak to and whose accomplishments and records can be viewed. Whereas in NSMBU, it's more of a collaborative commentary, with bosses and hard levels accoutred with tips and doubtless some expressions of exasperation.

Essentially, it's a pervasive mesh of social interaction that has a few standard forms (the message boards and chat) but will change its function depending on the game you're in. Hopefully it will have a better fate than Nintendo's other social efforts.

Mr. Eguchi also mentioned that there would be a spoiler warning system in place; obvious spoilers would be marked or removed, and posts could be flagged. During the Q&A session, it was asked whether Nintendo would also be monitoring posts for other content, such as language or "less than positive" comments. Eguchi responded affirmatively, saying that they wanted the Miiverse to be a place where people could feel safe and get reliable help, as opposed to internet forums where there is lots of noise and people who haven't played the game. He didn't outline the specifics, but Nintendo has a fairly conservative track record when it comes to potentially objectionable content.

Another question was asked regarding the ability to transfer saves, Virtual Console games and the like from the Wii to the Wii U. This was a definite yes: their engineers are hard at work on this, though he did not say whether it would be available at launch.

And speaking of the launch, one of the last questions was whether Nintendoland would be bundled with the Wii U the way Wii Sports was with the Wii. Eguchi noted that there was not in fact such a bundle in Japan, but that "the concept is similar" and though he couldn't say for sure, it was certainly a possibility.

There will be another talk this evening focusing on the 3DS, at which Mr. Tezuka suggested there would be reveals relating to New Super Mario Bros 2 for the handheld.

Queen Elizabeth joins giant jubilee flotilla

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's Queen Elizabeth joined an armada of 1,000 boats down London's River Thames to the pealing of bells on Sunday in a spectacular highlight of four days of nationwide celebrations to mark her 60th year on the throne.

Hundreds of thousands of cheering people waving "Union Jack" flags and dressed in red, white and blue braved the wind and rain to pack the 7-mile route for one of the largest flotillas ever seen on the river.

The queen, wearing a silver and white dress with a matching coat, smiled broadly and waved to large crowds before boarding the gilded royal barge, "The Spirit of Chartwell", alongside her 90-year-old husband Prince Philip.

Other members of the royal family on the barge included heir-to-the-throne Prince Charles, his eldest son Prince William and new wife Kate, a global fashion trendsetter who wore a vivid red Alexander McQueen dress and matching hat.

Up and down the country, millions of people were due to attend diamond jubilee street parties over the long holiday weekend in honour of the 86-year-old, the only British monarch after Queen Victoria to have sat on the throne for 60 years.

Leisure cruisers, rowing boats, yachts and canoes made up the colourful Thames armada that also featured vessels from the 1940 evacuation of British and Allied troops from Dunkirk in northern France - a famous rescue performed by crafts of all shapes and sizes and a celebrated piece of British history.

A typically inclement British summer's day failed to dampen enthusiasm, with boisterous crowds massed along the banks of the Thames, watching giant TV screens showing black-and-white images of the queen from her childhood.

"We're English, we know what the weather is like. We really don't care if we get wet you know - it's the jubilee, it's the queen, so it's nice to come up and celebrate it," said Jackie, a 39-year-old sales consultant who travelled across southern England to watch the event.

Organisers say Sunday's river pageant is the largest of its kind in 350 years since a similar spectacle was held for King Charles II and his consort Catherine of Braganza in 1662.

CHURCHILL AND EISENHOWER

Other vessels in the flotilla include Motor Torpedo Boat 102 on which Allied Forces commander General Dwight Eisenhower and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill inspected warships before the 1944 D-Day invasion of Nazi-occupied France.

It travels under 14 bridges and past landmarks including the Houses of Parliament, St Paul's Cathedral, and the Tower of London.

"There haven't been pageants like this on the River Thames for 300 years and that makes it extremely special," said Peter Warwick on board "The Macaret" launch with the flotilla. "You look at the river banks and they are packed with people."

Another boat taking part, "Amazon", featured in diamond jubilee celebrations for Queen Victoria, Elizabeth's great-great-grandmother, held in 1897 when Britain's empire spanned much of the globe.

Although the queen is still head of state in 16 countries from Australia and Canada to tiny Tuvalu in the Pacific Ocean and head of the Commonwealth, Britain is a shadow of its former imperial self.

Historians and commentators say the pomp and spectacle of British royal occasions gives the country a sense of national pride at a time when the economy is in recession and people face deep austerity measures.

STREET PARTIES

Across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, street parties were being held to mark the occasion. Prince Charles and his wife Camilla dropped into one in central London before the pageant, joining in a rousing rendition of the national anthem.

While the queen and the royal party braved the elements under a golden canopy on a barge in the middle of the Thames, the wet conditions proved too much for Prime Minister David Cameron, who moved his Downing Street party indoors.

That said, the government hoped the festivities would mark the start of a summer of revelry capped off by the Olympic Games in London, raising the public's spirits and their poll ratings.

"What is great is that we have the jubilee and then the Olympics. We should show how great we are in Britain," said Joanne Richmond, 61, from central England, who was in London for the queen's coronation as a two-year-old.

However, economists have warned that the extra public holidays will hit Britain's already ailing economy, potentially prolonging a recession.

The celebrations come as polls show the overwhelming backing for the monarchy, which has overcome a slump in the 1990s following marital infidelities and the death of the hugely popular Princess Diana in a 1997 Paris car crash

However, not everyone in London will be cheering. The small yet vocal republican movement plans a protest during the flotilla, saying the jubilee was "a celebration of inherited power and privilege, and those celebrations have no place in a modern democracy".

But even they acknowledge there is almost no chance that the queen will be ousted and take solace in indications many Britons are simply indifferent -- 2 million people are leaving the country to take advantage of the extended public holiday.

Celebrations will continue on Monday with a pop concert outside Elizabeth's London residence Buckingham Palace and conclude with a service of thanksgiving at St. Paul's Cathedral on Tuesday followed by a carriage procession.
