Redbox Instant headed to iOS, Android, many other devices; costs $8 per month for streaming and discs

Redbox Instant is almost here, and when it arrives sometime in early 2013, it'll cost around $8. Redbox announced pricing for its disc + streaming package this morning, pinning an $8 monthly charge to unlimited streaming, as well as access to four free one-night disc rentals at any Redbox kiosk ($9 a month turns those four discs into Blu-ray releases, magically). The service seeks to undermine streaming's 800 pound gorilla, Netflix, by undercutting its service offering -- Netflix's base streaming-only package starts at $8, whereas Redbox offers four disc rentals as well for the same price.

Redbox also announced that its instant service will head to Samsung-manufactured Blu-ray players and SmartHub TVs, as well as LG's Blu-ray players / Smart TVs, as well as Google TV devices. No word is given on the previously leaked Xbox 360 player, but we expect to hear more on that as Redbox Instant rolls out on an invitation-only basis later this month.

Official: Syria fires Scud missiles at rebels

(AP) ? Syrian government forces have fired Scud missiles at insurgents in recent days, escalating the 2-year-old conflict against rebels seeking to overthrow the regime, U.S. officials said Wednesday.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, two officials said forces of President Bashar Assad have fired the missiles from the Damascus area into northern Syria. These officials asked not to be named because they weren't authorized to discuss the matter publicly.

News of the missiles came on the same day that more than 100 countries, including the United States, recognized a new Syrian opposition coalition. That has further isolated Assad's regime and opened a way for greater humanitarian assistance to the forces battling to oust him.

One official said there was no indication that chemical weapons were aboard the missiles. Officials have said over the past week that they feared rebel advances were prompting Assad to consider using chemical weapons.

This official estimated that the number of Scuds fired was more than a half dozen, confirming details first reported by The New York Times.

State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said Assad has fired missiles, but wouldn't specify what kind.

"As the regime becomes more and more desperate, we see it resorting to increased lethality and more vicious weapons moving forward and we have in recent days seen missiles deployed," she said.

White House press secretary Jay Carney, speaking to reporters, said he could not confirm the report, but said if true it would be a sign of desperation.

"The idea that the Syrian regime would launch missiles, within its borders, at its own people, is stunning, desperate and a completely disproportionate military escalation," Carney said.

The new development happened as officials planned an international conference to further assist opposition to Assad.

"This is the usual pattern of behavior that whenever there is an important decision that is anti-Assad taken by the international community, the Assad regime escalates the degree of violence to show its degree of displeasure," said Murhaf Jouejati, a specialist on Syrian affairs at the National Defense University. "Like saying, 'Oh, yeah? I'll show you!' "

African Business Aviation Association selects Hadid International ...

This brings the number of Founding Members who have demonstrated fully funded commitment to the organisation to 19 in total. AfBAA is now working to establish who will be invited to join as the Final Founding member and anticipates the concluding selection, and closure of this significant category, by the end of the year.

Speaking about Hadid's acceptance of the Founding Member status, Tarek Ragheb, AfBAA Chairman commented, "We are delighted that Hadid has accepted our invitation to become a Founding Member. It is joining an exceptional line up of inaugural members and brings valuable experience and breadth of knowledge to the table."

The UAE-based Hadid International Services specialises in providing flight support services for executive jets and was invited to join due to its strong reputation for delivering exceptional services, the fact it has an existing presence in Africa and its ongoing commitment to developing business aviation in the region.

Hadid's Director of Business Development, Dr Adnan Branbo added, "We see tremendous growth and opportunities in Africa and recognise the need for a professional, thoughtfully structured and well-funded association that can support the development of the business aviation sector on the continent. Having the opportunity to be a Founding Member and contribute to shaping the future of economic development in Africa is a very exciting prospect for us."

The selection of Hadid International Services follows hard on the heels of AfBAA's NBAA announcement that it has launched three new membership categories which have been tailored to encourage membership applications from the full spectrum of aviation business.

Any commercial enterprise that owns or operates a General Aviation aircraft in Africa can join with "Operator Membership"; whilst the "Supplier Membership" is designed for those that provide goods and services to the industry. Both categories include voting rights at the Association's annual general meeting.

For those that do not fulfill either of the previous criteria the Affiliate Membership enables any entity with an abiding interest in Business Aviation within the region to join, but does not include voting rights.

Like other inaugural members Hadid International Services will retain membership until 2015 and will adhere to the guiding principles, which focus on advocacy, safety, security, integrity, service and training. Launch Members will also have a strong voice within the association and will be responsible for contributing to the future of the Association's activity.

Extremists among Syrian rebels who seized base

BEIRUT (AP) ? Syrian rebels including Islamic extremists took full control of a sprawling military base Tuesday after a bloody two-day battle that killed 35 soldiers, activists said. It was the latest gain by opposition forces bolstered by an al-Qaida-linked group that has provided skilled fighters but raised concerns in the West.

The Sheik Suleiman military base was the second major base captured in the north by the rebels, who also are making inroads farther south toward the capital, Damascus.

In other violence, dozens of people were reported injured or killed in Aqrab, a village in central Hama province, in a series of explosions. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported the bloodshed, citing activists in the area, but had no immediate death toll or details on who was to blame.

Fighters from jihadi groups, including Jabhat al-Nusra, were among those doing battle in the rebel ranks as they took control of Sheik Suleiman base, near the northern city of Aleppo, according to the Observatory and other activists.

The presence of the jihadi groups has raised concerns in the U.S. and other nations that are supporting the opposition in Syria but do not want to see extremists gain power in the region. The U.S. this week blacklisted al-Nusra as a foreign terrorist organization and said the group was part of al-Qaida in Iraq.

But al-Nusra fighters appear to be among the most effective fighting forces on the rebel side, spearheading many of the recent gains.

The U.S. terror designation freezes any assets members of al-Nusra may have in U.S. jurisdictions and bars Americans from providing the group with material support. It's largely symbolic because the group is not thought to have holdings or support in the United States, but officials hope the penalties will encourage others to take similar action and discourage Syrians from joining.

The administration took further action Tuesday against extremists on both sides, with the Treasury Department setting separate sanctions against two senior al-Nusra leaders and two militant groups operating under the control of Syrian President Bashar Assad's government. Two commanders of the pro-regime shabiha force also were targeted.

"We will target the pro-Assad militias just as we will the terrorists who falsely cloak themselves in the flag of the legitimate opposition," said David S. Cohen, the department's sanctions chief.

The battle for Sheik Suleiman military base ended when the rebels took over the site's main compound and warehouses that housed a military research center. They had first breached the base perimeter on Sunday afternoon, after weeks of fighting with soldiers loyal to Assad, according to the Observatory, which relies on a network of activists inside Syria. The Observatory said 35 soldiers were killed but did not give figures on rebel casualties.

Also Tuesday in Aleppo ? the country's largest city and commercial center ? four mortar rounds hit the predominantly Kurdish neighborhood of Sheik Maksoud, killing 11, including three children and two women, and wounding a dozen other people, the Observatory said.

The reports of violence could not be confirmed as the government restricts independent reporting in the country.

The conflict started nearly 21 months ago as an uprising against Assad, whose family has ruled the country for four decades. It quickly morphed into a civil war, with rebels taking up arms to fight back against a bloody crackdown by the government. According to activists, more than 40,000 people have been killed since March 2011.

Western officials have raised concerns that an increasingly desperate Assad might unleash his chemical weapons stockpiles against rebels in an act of desperation. Last week U.S. officials said there was evidence that Syrian forces had begun preparing sarin, a nerve agent, for possible use in bombs.

But U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said Tuesday the Syrian government seems to have slowed preparations for the possible use of chemical weapons against rebel targets.

Speaking to reporters flying with him from Washington to Kuwait, Panetta suggested the threat was no longer escalating, although he was not specific about any Syrian military preparations.

"At this point the intelligence has really kind of leveled off," he said. "We haven't seen anything new indicating any aggressive steps to move forward in that way."

Asked whether he believed Assad was heeding Western warnings against using chemical weapons, Panetta said: "I like to believe he's got the message. We've made it pretty clear. Others have as well."

He noted that the Assad regime is coming under increasing pressure from rebel forces.

"Our concern is that if they feel like the regime is threatened with collapse, they might resort to these kinds of weapons," he said.

Syria is believed to have a formidable arsenal of chemical weapons, including sarin and mustard gas, although its exact dimensions are not known. Syria is not a signatory to the 1997 Convention on Chemical Weapons and thus is not obliged to permit international inspection.

The government in Damascus has been careful not to confirm it has chemical weapons, while insisting it would never use such weapons against its own people.

"Syria doesn't own any internationally banned weapons, whether chemical, nuclear or biological," Syrian Information Minister Omran al-Zoubi told Al-Manar TV, a station owned by the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, which is a Syrian ally. "Even if Syria possessed such weapons, it will not use them for moral reasons."

He said Western statements are similar to those that preceded the 2003 invasion of Iraq that accused Saddam Hussein of hiding weapons of mass destruction. After the U.S.-led invasion, no such weapons were found.

The Obama administration is getting ready to tighten its ties to Syria's main opposition group, the newly formed Syrian National Coalition for Opposition and Revolutionary Forces, at an international conference on the crisis in Morocco this week. The move will pave the way for greater U.S. support for those seeking to oust Assad while the administration tries to blunt the influence of extremists.

Jabhat al-Nusra is a shadowy group with an al-Qaida-style ideology whose fighters come from Libya, Tunisia, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, the Balkans and elsewhere. Many are veterans of previous wars who came to Syria for what they consider a new "jihad" or "holy war" against Assad.

But several hundred fighters from Jabhat al-Nusra ? Arabic for "the Support Front" ? have also been a valued addition to rebel ranks in the grueling battle for control of Aleppo. The group also has claimed responsibility for suicide bombings on Syrian government targets.

Jabhat al-Nusra is the largest grouping of foreign jihadis in Syria, and the rebels say they number about 300 fighters in Aleppo, as well as branches in neighboring Idlib province, the city of Homs and Damascus. U.S. and Iraqi officials also have said they believe members of al-Qaida's branch in Iraq have crossed the border to join the fight against Assad.

Also Tuesday, the U.N. refugee agency said the number of Syrian refugees registered by the United Nations in the Middle East and North Africa has surpassed half a million.

The figure is climbing by more than 3,000 per day, UNHCR said. According to UNHCR's latest figures from Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq, Turkey and North Africa, more than 500,000 Syrians are either already registered or in the process of being registered.

Cayman Islands leader arrested in corruption probe

GEORGE TOWN, Cayman Islands (Reuters) - The leader of the Cayman Islands was arrested on Tuesday on suspicion of corruption in connection with a graft investigation in the Caribbean offshore financial center, authorities said.

Premier McKeeva Bush was detained at his home by members of the Financial Crime Unit of the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service, a police statement said.

The 57-year-old premier is suspected of theft, alleged misuse of a government credit card and abuse of office over the alleged importation of explosive substances without valid permits, it said.

"It would be inappropriate ... to make any further comment in relation to these matters at this time," the statement said. "Further updates will be made available in due course."

A police spokeswoman declined to elaborate on the arrest.

Leonard Dilbert, Bush's chief of staff, said the premier had been detained on suspicion of wrongdoing pending an investigation but had not been formally charged with any crime.

"It is important to remind the people of the Cayman Islands not to rush to judgment," he said. "Being suspected of having done something is far from it having been proven that you did that thing."

Bush was elected in 2009 as premier of the island chain, a British Overseas Territory with a population of 55,000 people and a leading global tax haven.

The islands are home to most of the world's hedge funds, offering tax advantages and financial secrecy to companies and investors.

Bush also holds the position of minister of finance and tourism. He is the longest-serving member of the Caymans' Legislative Assembly and was first elected in 1984.

Police searched Bush's home after his arrest and set up roadblocks restricting access to his residence, said a government official who requested anonymity because the investigation is still ongoing.

Earlier this year, Cayman Islands Police Commissioner David Baines said Bush was the subject of three police investigations, two of them involving what he described at the time as financial irregularities.

Bush publicly denied any wrongdoing.

Officials from Bush's United Democratic Party are examining the impact of his arrest on the government, according to a statement from Deputy Premier Julianna O'Connor-Connolly.

"We the government understand the gravity of this matter," she said.

Alden McLaughlin, an opposition leader from the People's Progressive Movement party, said Bush's arrest had opened "a period of uncertainty."

"The arrest of the premier is a hugely damaging body blow to the reputation of these islands and to confidence in our government," he said in a statement.

Facebook says some users briefly kept from site

(AP) ? Facebook says some users were briefly unable to access the site because of a technical glitch.

The social networking site with over 1 billion users worldwide says on Monday it made a change to its domain name system setup. The change resulted in some users temporarily not being able to reach the site.

The problem was detected and the site is now fully back.

A DNS acts like a phone book for the Internet, translating a domain name like facebook.com into a number that points to a specific host computer.

Facebook did not say how many users were affected or for how long. Some technology blogs say the problems lasted about 20 minutes.

Europe backs Monti reforms as Italy crisis hits markets

ROME (Reuters) - European partners urged the next Italian government on Monday to stick to Prime Minister Mario Monti's reform agenda, after his decision to resign early and Silvio Berlusconi's return to frontline politics rattled financial markets.

Monti's surprise weekend announcement that he would quit because Berlusconi's People of Freedom (PDL) party had withdrawn its support for his technocrat government pushed up Italy's borrowing costs and prompted a stock market sell-off.

The campaign for an election expected in February is likely to be fought over Monti's reform agenda which Berlusconi, his predecessor as prime minister, said had condemned Italy to recession and forced him reluctantly to run for a fifth term.

By contrast European politicians and officials warned that Monti's policies must continue to prevent a return of the crisis which brought him to power a year ago, when he was charged with rescuing the euro zone's third biggest economy from the threat of a Greek-style collapse.

"Monti was a great prime minister of Italy and I hope that the policies he put in place will continue after the elections," European Council President Herman Van Rompuy said in Oslo, where he was part of a European Union delegation receiving the Nobel Peace Prize.

The comments echoed similar remarks in the past two days from policymakers ranging from French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius to the head of the European bailout fund Klaus Regling and European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso.

With Rome's European allies doing little to conceal dismay at the thought of Berlusconi's return - on a day when his trial on sex charges was also back in the headlines - the billionaire former premier called the EU sniping at him an insult to Italy.

Spanish Economy Minister Luis de Guindos warned that instability there could spill over and put Spain's fragile public finances at risk of further turmoil.

Attention is now focused on whether Monti will enter politics himself, either as a candidate or by endorsing one of the centrist forces that have backed his reforms and made more or less explicit pleas for him to run.

The daily La Repubblica quoted the 69-year-old former European Commissioner as saying that he had not yet made up his mind but was worried by the situation. "I don't know," he was quoted as saying. "If I had to ... describe my feelings today, I would say that I am very concerned."

He has repeatedly warned of the danger posed by the rise of populist, anti-European forces in the region.

CENTRE-LEFT LEADS

Monti's decision to resign once the 2013 budget is approved, probably before Christmas, has brought forward to February an election that had already been expected in March or by the latest April.

Opinion polls suggest Berlusconi has little chance of re-election and he has struggled to reassert his previously undisputed domination of rival factions and courtiers in his deeply divided centre-right party.

The centre-left Democratic Party (PD) under Pier Luigi Bersani holds a strong lead and is likely to form the next government on a broadly pro-European platform, largely in line with Monti's agenda.

Bersani - who hopes that the former European Commissioner will stay on in some capacity, possibly as Italy's president - said on Monday that "precisely because Monti should still be able to be of service to this country, it would be better for him to stay out of the contest".

Berlusconi's strategy appears designed to ensure he retains influence in the next parliament with a substantial voting bloc that, among other things, can protect his business and personal interests.

After several weeks of calm, markets bridled at the prospect of Berlusconi's return to lead the centre-right, just over a year after a financial crisis drove the scandal-plagued billionaire from office to be replaced by Monti's technocrats.

"You can expect a sharpening in anti-austerity, anti-reform rhetoric...and this will probably translate into a higher risk premium on Italian assets," said Goldman Sachs analysts Silvia Ardagna and Francesco Garzarelli.

The main measure of investors' confidence, the spread between Italian 10-year government bonds and their lower risk German equivalent, widened to 362 basis points from 325 late on Friday, reflecting worries over a return to the political uncertainty which dogged Italy last year.

Milan's blue-chip share index dropped over 3 percent, with sharper falls in banking stocks that are seen as most vulnerable to a renewed debt crisis.

"IRRESPONSIBILITY"

Berlusconi's reappearance on the frontline and the prospect of a messy anti-Monti election campaign galvanised attention in Italy and abroad, reawakening memories of the financial and sexual scandals that plagued the media magnate's last government.

Rubbing in the point, the prosecutor in Berlusconi's trial on charges of having sex with a juvenile prostitute accused the 76-year-old of delaying tactics after the young woman failed to appear as a witness.

A barrage of comment from European leaders underlined the concern about Berlusconi's return and the Roman Catholic Church made outspoken and thinly veiled criticism of the former premier that may influence the PDL's conservative voting base.

"What leaves one astonished is the irresponsibility of those who think of arranging things for themselves while the house is still burning," the influential head of the Italian bishop's conference, Angelo Bagnasco, told the Corriere della Sera.

On Monday night, Belusconi issued a terse statement rejecting the negative comments from foreign politicians and media as an offensive interference in domestic affairs.

He said he had always been a "convinced supporter of Europe" and that the comments were "offensive not so much to me personally but to the free choice of the Italians."

With a new government likely to be formed in a few months, Italy's European partners have now started to look more closely at Bersani, the overwhelming victor in a centre-left primary election last month.

A no-frills former communist who is close to Italy's trade unions, Bersani has promised to stick to the promises on fiscal discipline the government has made and has said that Monti is likely to continue playing a role after the election.

While Italy's election laws are likely to give Bersani a strong majority in the lower house, the complicated rules may make it more difficult for him to take control of the Senate, posing a possible risk to the formation of a stable government.

Whoever wins will have to confront a severe recession, record unemployment and a ballooning public debt expected to surpass 126 percent of gross domestic product this year.

The depth of the crisis was underlined on Monday, with data showing GDP shrinking 2.4 percent in the third quarter and industrial production dropping 1.1 percent in October.

Gov't: Building felled by NZ quake poorly built

SYDNEY (AP) ? A six-story office building that collapsed and killed 115 people in New Zealand's devastating earthquake last year was poorly designed by an inexperienced engineer, inadequately constructed and should never have been issued a building permit, a government report said Monday.

The Canterbury Television (CTV) building crumbled to the ground during the 6.1-magnitude earthquake that rocked Christchurch on Feb. 22, 2011. The building's collapse was responsible for nearly two-thirds of the 185 deaths from the quake.

Monday's report was the final release from the government-ordered commission that spent months investigating the buildings damaged in the quake. Findings the commission released in February concluded that the CTV building was made of weak columns and concrete and did not meet standards when it was built in 1986. The building's designer contested those findings.

Prime Minister John Key said building failures were responsible for 175 of the 185 deaths from the quake.

"We owed it to them, their loved ones left behind, and those people badly injured in the earthquake, to find answers as to why some buildings failed so severely," Key said in a statement.

The report found several deficiencies in the CTV building's engineering design and said the city council should never have issued the building a permit because the design did not comply with the standards at the time. The commission also concluded that there were problems with the building's construction.

The commission blamed the engineers from Alan Reay Consultants Ltd. for developing an inadequate and noncompliant design and city officials for not noticing the problems.

The report said the structural design was completed by engineer David Harding, who had no experience designing multistory buildings like the CTV and was "working beyond his competence." Yet Harding never sought assistance from his boss, Alan Reay. The report blamed Reay for leaving Harding to work unsupervised, despite knowing that Harding lacked experience.

The report also found that Reay pressured city officials to approve the building despite them having some reservations about it.

Harding's lawyer, Michael Kirkland, said neither he nor his client had read through the report so they couldn't comment. Reay also declined to comment.

Mary-Anne Jackson, who fled the building seconds before it collapsed with a deafening boom, said she and other CTV workers had long felt unsafe in the building. She said it shook when trucks drove by and there were cracks in the walls. Jackson hopes Reay and others involved in the building's design and construction will face criminal charges.

"I want justice and accountability," Jackson told The Associated Press. "It's just devastating and it just never goes away. It's always there and I'll take it to the grave with me."

The commission noted that the building had been issued a "green sticker" following a magnitude-7.0 earthquake in September 2010, signaling authorities had given it the thumbs-up for people to continue using it.

An investigation by the AP last year found that inspection checks routinely used across the world to verify the safety of buildings following earthquakes fail to account for how well those buildings will withstand future quakes. The AP found that building occupants and public officials in Christchurch did not understand that a "green sticker" doesn't mean the building has undergone a thorough analysis of its structural health, nor that it will stay intact during future quakes.

The commission's report found that the CTV building was given a green sticker after being inspected by just three building officials, none of whom was an engineer. The commission recommended that in the future, only trained building safety evaluators be authorized to inspect buildings after earthquakes, and that government agencies should research how to account for aftershocks.

Maan Alkaisi, whose wife Maysoon Abbas died in the building's collapse, praised the commission for its thorough investigation.

"Now we know that there were many design deficiencies in the CTV building and we know who was responsible for these design deficiencies and why," Alkaisi told the AP. "I don't want to see this happening again, so we have to make sure that the recommendation made by the royal commission is adopted, that much better building standard is adopted and much better engineering practice is also adopted."

Brian Kennedy, whose wife Faye died when the building fell, said the report had brought him a measure of closure and that he was not interested in punishing the engineers or construction team involved.

"I think (I'm) trying to look forward a little more positively now," Kennedy told the AP. "Time heals a wee bit ? not everything, but it makes it a little easier."

TI joins the Alliance for Wireless Power, tells the WPC it can still be friends

Alliance for Wireless Power graphic

It's not quite a "Dear John" letter, but we're sure the Wireless Power Consortium is heartbroken all the same. One of its key members, TI, has just signed up for the Alliance for Wireless Power to build cable-free charging on what's effectively a competing standard. The chip designer doesn't view the move as abandoning a long-time partner, though -- it remains part of the WPC and plans to produce Qi-based wireless power chipsets alongside future A4WP components. Without any related chips to announce, there's a long wait left before we know how well TI can juggle the two charging formats without appearing to play favorites. We'd recommend that the WPC not grow too attached in the meantime.

Bavarians promise Greeks solidarity instead of scorn

MUNICH (Reuters) - Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras visited Bavaria on Sunday, charming former critics of Greece in the southern German state who once wished to eject his country from the euro zone, and departing with pledges of solidarity and support.

Samaras' visit to Munich and dinner with Bavaria's State Premier Horst Seehofer on Sunday night was another sign of the new thaw in Greek-German relations that started when Chancellor Angela Merkel visited Athens in October and was convinced of Athens' commitment to painful reforms.

"We want to support the Greek government and the Greek people, and help them gain economic growth and competitiveness," Seehofer said at a press conference with Samaras.

Seehofer added the Greeks deserved deep respect for their achievements. "They are on a good way to overcoming the causes of the crisis."

Samaras' trip was partly a charm offensive in one of Germany's most conservative and affluent areas, as well as a plea to international creditors to keep the faith in Athens' reforms.

"To force an upswing, we need blood and air, which keeps the economy alive, and that is liquidity," Samaras said.

His visit to Bavaria came little under two weeks after Greece's international creditors clinched an agreement on reducing the country's debt, allowing the release of urgently needed loans to keep the near-bankrupt economy afloat.

The Greek Prime Minister added that a debt buy back that is key to the bail out was going very well.

"I believe that by Monday or Tuesday, I will be able to say with great certainty that things went very well," he said.

Merkel and her centre-right government have taken a much more conciliatory tone on Greece - a country which had been branded a "bottomless pit" by some of her lawmakers - focusing instead on the progress made by Greece and the suffering of its citizens as tough reforms bite.

Seehofer and his Christian Social Union (CSU), sister party to Merkel's conservatives, have fallen into line behind the Chancellor, acknowledging that bailing out Greece is less costly than the chaos that would follow if it left the euro zone.

Previously CSU deputies had taken a tough stance, repeatedly calling for Greece to be thrown out of the euro zone, suggesting its civil servants be paid in drachmas and likening bailing out Greece to "watering flowers in the desert".

Seehofer pledged that a "more open, sensitive and sensible tone" should dominate in the debate on Greece.

Bavarians consider themselves passionate Europeans and readily admit they have benefited hugely from the euro zone, with the larger part of their goods and services exported to the region. Yet the affluent state, where traditional values are held dear, is also proud of its balanced budget and has little time for profligacy.

Samaras told the Muenchner Merkur local newspaper in an interview published in its weekend edition Bavarians and Greeks shared the same values and ideals.

"We have nothing to hide from each other, but a lot to gain when we talk. I'm looking forward to a new start in our relations."

Behind the scenes Germany has long been trying to promote projects and corporate networks that can bring German business acumen to Greece as well as twinning towns to try and bring Germans and Greeks closer together.

NEW YORK (AP) ? The Rolling Stones have been added to the list of artists performing at the Superstorm Sandy benefit concert next week in New York City.

Next Wednesday's bill had already included Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band, The Who, Alicia Keys, Kanye West and others.

Producers of the show said Friday they had already raised $30 million that will be distributed to storm victims in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut through the Robin Hood Foundation.

The show is sold out.

Producers also said they had no estimate of how many tickets had been bought by ticket brokers. They urged fans not to buy scalped tickets because the money won't go to storm relief.

The concert is dubbed "12-12-12." It will be held at Madison Square Garden.

BioNumbers: An Online Database of Useful Biological Numbers ...

")

Who wants to know how many cells are in a single colony of Escherichia coli? (3.39). Or the egg size of Drosophila melanogaster? (12.3 nL). Or how about the genomic mutation rate in Arabidopsis thaliana? (0.28 ? 0.42 mutations per diploid genome per generation).

Who am I kidding? Who wouldn?t want to know those numbers?!

Now there?s a website for numerical bio geeks to scour for random information, or for researchers to find useful numbers for their experiments and papers. BioNumbers is an online database started in 2007, which consolidates numbers from the biological world.

Each entry has a link to a reference, with some information on methodology, so you can fact-check for yourself before throwing a number in a manuscript. Users can submit numbers (with references) and ?wish lists? of numbers they?d like to see.

As well as general browsing (via which I found the numbers cited above), to test out the search prowess of the site, I threw in a few search terms including ?seeds? (my research area). A few results came up, but I was mostly interested to find information on the estimated divergence of several groups like monocots and dicots (130 ? 220 MYA), or mosses and seed plants (c. 430 MYA). Information like this might have been helpful when I was an undergraduate, but I?m not sure I?d use it now ? except perhaps for adding some finer details to an almost-complete manuscript.

For my own research, I?d have a hard time finding useful numbers from their current database. First, because I?m an ecologist more than anything else and the site is largely molecular focused, and second because I don?t work on those ?traditional? species like Arabidopsis or Drosophila. I can, however, see how the database could grow to include numbers of interest to other fields. For instance, in my research area of seed dispersal, there are piles of scattered information about seed sizes, fruit compositions and diet breadth of frugivores.

That?s probably getting away from the goal of the database though, which is to build a reference source similar to those used in chemistry or engineering (what is the melting point of Tungsten, anyway?). Which is where I think the site falls down a little; one of the troublesome things about biology as a scientific discipline is that it?s just not as clear cut as, say, physics or chemistry. Yes, there are those of us who work on ?model species?, but many of us boldly go where no scientist has gone before, researching new study species. Or, like myself, live in smallish countries where general information is not abundant on our chosen species.

An additional segment is the ?BioNumber of the Month? (several months out of date at the time of writing). Each month?s link leads to a few pages of text about a particular value: but having said that, none of the links I checked out made for particularly friendly or accessible reading. This idea really fascinates me, though: I would totally read a fun, monthly article about some crazy number I wouldn?t otherwise consider, but I get enough dry text through journal articles, so a livelier approach would be appreciated.

The site has the potential to be a great information sharing venture, with an almost crowd-sourcing feel. We all read journal articles all day every day anyway; what if the next time you came across a value of interest, you had a website to throw it onto? There will be some necessary questions about validating the source of information, but that?s a worthwhile question to be considering in this current age of information sharing over the internet highway.

In short, right now for me this is a fun toy, but probably not a practical tool. But then, I am a hippy ecologist. So what do you think of the database? Is there anything you could see yourself using? What numbers do you wish you had easy access to for your research?

Get Even More Done With Internet Marketing And - Turn $1 into $100

When you are starting a business or you want to get more business you should use Internet marketing. The internet provides tons of information on internet marketing, but this can definitely be overwhelming at times. This article should help you sort through this confusion with some succinct tips.

One of the most promising ways to market your services and products is to identify a profitable niche. For instance, if you are trying to sell baseball cards you should focus on sites that have visitors that are interested in at least baseball. People will look for what they need in areas that offer exactly what it is that they are looking for. Unless you are one of the rare businesses that sells completely disparate product lines, pay close attention to the needs of your most viable target market.

If you hold any kind of promotion, event or product push online, you must track how it is perceived by your customers in an effort to make the next offering more successful. Look at how people interact with you on blogs and forums when you launch any type of an event. Use their ideas and advice to help your business as well as to show them respect for their input.

Use headlines whenever possible. Make them attention-getting and related to what you provide on your website. You could even forgo the headline and add a graphic of what you?re trying to sell. Professional graphics offer a sophisticated alternative to mere words.

You will need to attract people to make money. Split tests are a great way to find out how your website is doing. Split tests work by showing one group a version of a website, and then showing a second group a different version. Then you choose the best one based on new subscriptions.

Employ a lot of descriptions on the site. Use adjectives liberally in your descriptions. Be creative, and come up with your own words and site- or product-specific jargon. Keep them coming back just for the comments and conversations.

Take advantage of social media websites such as Facebook or Twitter and integrate them into your marketing strategy. These social media sites keep you in direct contact with your customers and give you the quickest way to promote sales or promotions. Just be wary of over-promoting. Try to keep your posts valuable and insightful, and only include marketing in a portion of them.

If you give your customers an extra freebie if they refer friends, they may be more likely to sign up. You can easily turn one sale into five by offering customers a free product or a refund for referring five friends to the site. People love free and this can get more traffic your way.

Doing business online is an anonymous affair for the most part. This approach is especially useful for small businesses that rely on networking and word of mouth to foster customer loyalty.

Knowledge of your competitors is one of the keys to successfully marketing your business. Familiarity with the products of your competitor and good marketing skills equal success for you and will leave your competitor watching gape-jawed as you successfully and profitably win the day. This is essentially your goal when it comes to Internet marketing.

For instance, if your business focuses on selling websites, you might want to partner up with writers that give their customers discounts. In return, the blogger can make discounts available for your websites and other offerings. The resulting exposure to a broader audience will eventually earn you both more money.

Internet marketing does not have a set formula, in reality you can say it is composed of half science and half art. Before using Internet marketing, know both sides of it. This is why it?s very important that you?re able to walk the tightrope here. You have to reach on either side as it?s demanded of you. If you?re only versed in one area, you may end up failing.

If your target audience would be interested in making charitable donations, you might want to consider having a portion of your proceeds going to a charity. The fact that you make these donations should be advertised on your site. It does not need to be a huge percentage to see additional sales.

One tip webmasters forget is to keep their sites simple. It is tempting to use a number of fancy multimedia tools, such as Adobe Flash or Silverlight, and web designers often use them because of visual effects. They need to also be aware that some visitors cannot use that technology. A well designed website that encourages business finds a way to be fully functional, even without the latest shiny and flashy features.

Remember to use emphasis tools when you are creating text for your website. You can increase a word?s strength by bolding it or italicizing it. This helps convey the message to the customer exactly the way you want, providing extra emphasis and clarity where necessary.

Are you searching for an online marketing plan? Allow several opportunities for visitors to leave their email address and other information. Offer them a freebie or a chance to enter a contest if they will let you send marketing emails to them. People are more likely to provide you with their email addresses when it is apparent that doing so is beneficial to them.

Your company needs a tagline and a logo, no matter how small it is online. These tools are going to assist with building brand recognition. A catchy catch-phrase will help your customers to remember you and come back for repeat business. When a customer decides it?s time to buy something, a memorable slogan might be the key to getting them to come to you.

If you put the time and effort into a proper internet marketing campaign, it can be an efficient and inexpensive way to promote your business. By applying the tips and familiarizing yourself with the advice from this article, you will help increase the potential earnings from incorporating internet marketing into your overall marketing scheme.

December 7, 2012, 11:59 a.m.

In the wake of last month's deadly Texas train crash, the Midland Police Department does not plan to file charges against the man who drove a parade float carrying 12 veterans and their wives onto railroad tracks, a city spokeswoman said Friday.

The Nov. 15 crash in the West Texas town killed four veterans and seriously wounded five other people. The driver, Dale Andrew Hayden, was not physically injured in the crash.

?We don?t have any plans to file against the driver,? spokeswoman Sara Higgins told the Los Angeles Times.

She said the police report on the tragedy is nearing completion. It will then be sent to the district attorney?s office. ?

She could not explain why police do not plan to file charges against Hayden, but added that such information may be included in the forthcoming report.?

Midland County Assistant Dist. Atty. Steve Stallings told the Los Angeles Times that until he receives the police report, no decision can be made by his office on whether to prosecute Hayden.

Officials with the National Transportation Safety Board have previously said the truck pulling the float drove onto the tracks while warning bells rang. Witnesses said one of the crossing arms had dropped down and hit the parade float as it attempted to cross.

As of Wednesday, NTSB investigators still hadn?t interviewed Hayden.

The accident left Hayden ?highly traumatized" and he has received hate mail, according to Dallas-based lawyer Douglas Fletcher, who represents Hayden's employer,?in an interview with?the Los Angeles Times.

Fletcher said Hayden had been placed in a VA hospital in Big Spring, Texas, within 72 hours of the crash.

Senate GOP fails to bring up immigration bill

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Senate Democrats on Wednesday blocked Republicans from bringing up an immigration bill offering permanent residence visas for foreigners with advanced degrees that passed the House last week despite the opposition of most Democrats.

Senate Republican John Cornyn of Texas sought unanimous consent to consider the bill that provides some 55,000 green cards a year to those with masters and doctorate degrees from U.S. colleges in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

"We all know that America's immigration system is broken, but in particular by driving away highly skilled foreign workers who want to start businesses and create jobs right here in America," he said.

New York's Sen. Chuck Schumer, a Democratic leader on immigration policies, objected to Cornyn's request. Schumer said Democrats support creating so-called STEM visas and he has a proposal to do that. "But what we don't do is take away other visas or add in other extraneous positions."

House Republicans turned to their STEM bill as a way to show Hispanics, who deserted them in the November election, that they are serious about immigration legislation. But it met strong opposition from Democrats because it eliminated another visa program that benefits less-educated people, particularly from Africa. The Congressional Hispanic Caucus said Republicans were trying to pick winners and losers among different people who want to gain permanent residency.

The Republican bill would also have made it easier for the spouses and families of people with green cards to enter the United States while they wait for their own green card applications to be approved.

The STEM bill is seen as an opening skirmish as Congress and the White House plan for writing comprehensive immigration legislation next year dealing with both legal immigrants and the estimated 11 million living in the country illegally.

Jack Abramoff and Tom DeLay meet for first time in years

LONDON (Reuters) - Michael Palin was deadly serious, Terry Jones yawned and Eric Idle looked like he was half asleep. At London's High Court on Wednesday, proceedings in a case over royalties from the hit musical "Spamalot" were distinctly humorless, despite the presence of three out of six members of the surreal comedy troupe Monty Python. Palin took the witness stand and, under cross examination, rejected the idea that Mark Forstater, who produced the group's hit 1975 movie "Monty Python and the Holy Grail", would ever have been considered the "seventh Python". ...

Needless to say, the past year has been a crazy one for him, and he's picked up a few tips and tricks along the way. We caught a moment out of Bradford's schedule to find out the best ones.

Name: Bradford Shellhammer
Occupation: Founder and Chief Design Officer at Fab
Location: New York, NY
Current computer: 13" MacBook Pro Retina
Current mobile device: iPhone 5
I work: Loudly

What's your best time-saving shortcut/life hack?

Working lunches! Fab was formed over a dinner table, so I think work more passionately and efficiently with food. I'd be lying if I said I relaxed during lunch?it's the height of the day and the end of the day in our Berlin office, so during that time I'm usually in a meeting with the team chowing down or having a more leisurely lunch with a client. Either way, there's no downtime: I work straight through the day, and I think that helps me stay on point, save time, focus, and get shit done.

What apps/software/tools can't you live without?

Evernote. It keeps me organized.

Besides your phone and computer, what gadget can't you live without?

My Alessi corkscrew. It's the most important gadget in the world!

What's your workspace setup like?

My office at Fab is full of my favorite products we've featured on the site, plus a colorful selection of snacks and candy, and a big red pog by Molla Space?that holds all my magazines in its mouth. The left side of my office opens up into a conference room that Jason, our CEO, shares. He's on the other side of the conference room, and we can keep the doors open to be in touch with one another throughout the day. My desktop itself is pretty minimal?just my laptop, monitor, notepad, and pens. Also, AMAC containers set for business cards and other little things. But even though that's my favorite space to work in, I'm back and forth between NYC, Berlin, and India constantly, so my office is really wherever my laptop is.?

What do you listen to while you work?

I listen to clich? gay music: Erasure, Madonna, Cyndi Lauper, Depeche Mode, Pet Shop Boys?that kind of stuff. I try to listen to new music, but my heart won't let me leave 1992.

What's your favorite to-do list manager?

I have two. The old fashioned way: I keep a notebook and clear off and rewrite my list daily. I also use Evernote for receipts, travel plans, important passwords, and inspirations.

What's your sleep routine like?

I'm in bed by 11PM and up at 6:30AM every day to head to the gym like clockwork. I'm an early riser with no need for an alarm.

What everyday thing are you better at than anyone else?

I am better at laughing than everyone else. I always see the humor in things?heck, we've built a business around it!

What's the best advice you've ever received?

Once my mom told me: Only you can embarrass yourself. That really freed me. And Madonna said: Poor is the man whose pleasure depends on the permission of another. I like that one. Oh! And Auntie Mame said: Life is a banquet and most suckers are starving.? Basically, they were all saying the same thing?eat at the trough of life and don't give a shit what the other animals are thinking. I love that.

Is there anything else you'd like to add for readers?

Watch Auntie Mame, if you have not! It will CHANGE YOUR LIFE.
